Recordings of the Rain July 2023 Sheffield.

July seems to have been an exceptionally rainy month here in the UK. Maybe it’s the influence of the El Niño weather system, a “stuck” jetstream, climate change, or just an unusual year — most likely a combination of all those things!

I used the opportunity of almost daily rainfall to practice listening and recording with different microphones and setups. Rain is so familiar to us (especially in the UK!) yet the complexities, nuances and musicality of its sound are probably not.

This is not a sound library of pristine rain recordings from “exotic” locations, all these recordings were made with inexpensive recording equipment in my house and garden in a busy Sheffield suburb in July 2023. There are cars, pigeons and aircraft!

My recommendation is that you listen to this collection in a dedicated way in a quiet moment using headphones at a level that makes it sound similar to listening to the rain!

It has been fascinating and enjoyable to focus in on the sound of the rain and record it in different ways and I fully expect this to be just volume one of my recordings of the rain.
